Mr. M. C. Varghese is a legendary figure in Malayalam Journalism, who set an all time record in circulation of 1.5 million copies for Mangalam, a Malayalam weekly, founded and edited by him. His life from a newspaper boy to the head of a chain of newspapers and magazines is an incredible saga of a man of vision with true social commitment.
Mr. Varghese, a philanthropist journalist, set an example to other newspaper establishments by constructing and donating a spacious Cancer Ward in the Kottayam Medical College Hospital with the participation of the readers of Mangalam. He had also raised millions of rupees from the readers through the depiction of true stories about the victims of cruel fate and distributed among them, which was a new chapter in Malayalam Journalism. When Mangalam weekly crossed its circulation of 1.5 million copies 15 houses were built in all the districts of Kerala and given to the homeless people free of cost.
He constituted the ‘Mangalam Kala Sahityavedi’ which promotes arts, literature and social service activities among the youth of our society. It has 1500 units in India and abroad doing credible services. He is also the founder of Mangalam Educational Society which runs a number of educational institutions like Mangalam College of Engineering, College of Management Studies, College of Education, Teacher Training Institute, English Medium Residential Schools, School of Printing Technology, College of Allied Health Sciences etc.
Various organizations in the country including the Rajiv Gandhi Peace Foundation, United Children’s Movement, Humanist National Committee and Sree Narayana Cultural Forum had honored this doyen of magazine journalism in Malayalam, with their prestigious awards.
His vast vision has made Managalam group of companies to grow exponentially from news paper to television channel in the arena of media and entertainment.
